Statistics Calculator

Paste numbers to get the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation.

How to use this calculator

Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas or spaces, and press Calculate. The tool reports the count, sum, mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, variance and standard deviation all at once. It handles decimals and negative numbers, so it suits test scores, measurements, prices, survey results and any other dataset you need to summarise quickly. The standard deviation reported is the sample standard deviation, the version normally used when your numbers are a sample rather than an entire population.

The formulas explained

The headline measures come from a few definitions:

mean = Σx ÷ n · variance = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1) · sd = √variance

The mean is the simple average. The median is the middle value once the data is sorted (or the average of the two middle values for an even count), and it resists being pulled around by outliers. The mode is the most frequent value. Variance measures how spread out the numbers are by averaging their squared distances from the mean, and the standard deviation is its square root, putting the spread back into the original units.

A worked example

For the set 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42: the sum is 108 and the count is 6, so the mean is 18. Sorted, the two middle values are 15 and 16, giving a median of 15.5. No value repeats, so there is no mode. The sample standard deviation works out to about 13.49, showing the numbers are fairly spread out around the mean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mean?

The average — add all the numbers and divide by how many there are.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the average; the median is the middle sorted value, which is less affected by extreme numbers.

How do you find standard deviation?

Take the square root of the average squared distance of each value from the mean.
