GPA Calculator

Enter your courses to calculate your GPA on a 4.0 scale.

How to use this calculator

For each course, choose the grade you earned and type the number of credit hours (or units) it was worth, then press Calculate GPA. Use Add course to include as many subjects as you need. The tool multiplies each grade by its credits, so heavier courses count more, and divides by your total credits to give a weighted GPA. To find your cumulative CGPA across several terms, simply enter every course from every term together — the same calculation gives the cumulative figure.

The formula explained

GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points:

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

On the standard 4.0 scale, A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0 and F is 0, with plus and minus grades falling in between. Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours to get "quality points." Adding all the quality points and dividing by the total credit hours gives the GPA. Because credits act as weights, a high grade in a 4-credit class moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit class.

A worked example

Suppose you took an A (4.0) worth 3 credits and a B (3.0) worth 4 credits. The quality points are 4.0 × 3 = 12 and 3.0 × 4 = 12, totalling 24 over 7 credits. Dividing gives a GPA of 3.43. Notice the B pulled the average below 3.5 because it carried more credits than the A — that credit weighting is the whole point of GPA.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, total them, and divide by total credit hours.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA covers one term; CGPA averages all your terms together across the whole programme. Enter every course to get CGPA here.

What is the 4.0 scale?

A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0, weighted by credit hours, with +/− grades in between.
