Division Calculator

Divide any two numbers for an exact decimal answer, plus the whole-number quotient and remainder.

÷

How to use this calculator

Enter the number you want to divide (the dividend) and the number you are dividing by (the divisor), then press Calculate. The tool gives you the exact decimal answer, and — when both numbers are whole — also the quotient and remainder. It accepts decimals and large numbers, so it works for everyday sums, recipe scaling, splitting bills, and checking schoolwork. If you want to see every hand-written step of the division, use our Long Division Calculator instead.

The formula explained

Division reverses multiplication. For whole numbers it satisfies:

dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder

The decimal answer is simply the dividend divided by the divisor carried out past the decimal point. The quotient is the whole-number part of how many times the divisor fits, and the remainder is whatever is left over before you would start adding decimal places. When the remainder is zero, the division is exact and the decimal answer has no fractional part.

A worked example

Take 156 ÷ 7. Seven fits into 156 a total of 22 whole times (22 × 7 = 154), leaving a remainder of 2. Carried out as a decimal, 156 ÷ 7 ≈ 22.2857. So depending on what you need, the answer is "22 remainder 2" or "about 22.29". The calculator shows both forms at once.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quotient and remainder?

The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend; the remainder is the amount left over.

Can it divide decimals?

Yes — enter decimal values and it returns the exact decimal answer.

How is this different from long division?

This gives the answer directly. For the full step-by-step worksheet, use the Long Division Calculator.
